What Wedding Videographers Really Do

When you hire a wedding videographer, it may seem like their job is simply to show up, press record, and hand you a highlight reel a few weeks later. But the reality? Wedding videographers wear many hats before, during, and after your big day—often working quietly behind the scenes to make sure your love story is captured beautifully from start to finish.
At Starr Photo & Video, we’re more than just camera operators. We’re storytellers, problem-solvers, timeline-managers, and post-production wizards. If you’ve ever wondered what really goes into wedding videography, we’re here to pull back the curtain.

The Work Starts Long Before the Ceremony
Long before the vows are exchanged or the music starts playing, we’re hard at work. Our pre-wedding process includes:
Getting to know you as a couple. We want to understand your style, what moments matter most to you, and how you envision your wedding day being remembered. Are you dreaming of a romantic, slow-motion montage? Or a fun, upbeat vibe filled with laughter and dancing?
Coordinating with your photographer and planner. We’re a team player! Great results come when everyone is on the same page, so we always collaborate to make sure your timeline flows smoothly and you’re never stuck posing for two cameras at once.
Preparing our gear. We bring multiple cameras, backup audio devices, lighting, batteries, and memory cards. We double- and triple-check our equipment so nothing is left to chance.
On the Wedding Day: Calm, Creative, and Always Watching
Wedding videographers often blend into the background, but we’re constantly active behind the scenes.
While you’re sipping mimosas or adjusting your tie, we’re capturing the quiet, candid moments: the way your mom tears up while buttoning your dress, the laughter of your bridal party, the nervous excitement before the ceremony. These subtle shots add emotional depth to your wedding film.
Once the ceremony starts, we shift into coverage mode—positioning our cameras for multiple angles, capturing both close-ups and wide shots, and making sure audio is crisp and clear. We’ll often wear a wireless mic on the officiant and one of you (with your permission) to get perfect sound for your vows.
During the reception, we’re always ready to follow the action—first dances, speeches, cake cutting, or spontaneous moments on the dance floor. But even as things get more relaxed, we’re still thinking creatively: looking for reactions, lighting opportunities, and natural storytelling flow.
And yes, if the weather turns wild (which we’ve seen plenty, we’re there with solutions, covering our gear and making sure your memories are safe—rain or shine.
Post-Wedding Magic: Where the Real Story Comes to Life
Editing is where the raw footage transforms into your final wedding video—and it’s no small task. For every minute of video you receive, we spend hours sifting through clips, choosing the best angles, syncing moments, and building a narrative that feels true to you.
Here’s a glimpse into our editing process:
Footage review: We go through hours of content from multiple cameras to find the best moments, the most meaningful looks, and the most beautiful shots.
Music and audio: Every video includes music that you get to choose from one of our licensed music sites. This ensures your video stays both personal and legal for online sharing. If you’d like to include the audio from your vows or speeches, that can be added on! We offer high-quality audio recording and syncing as an upgrade for couples who want those heartfelt words woven into their video.
Storytelling: We don’t just line up clips—we craft a story. We blend cinematic visuals with the music you’ve chosen, creating a highlight reel that truly reflects your personality and the emotion of your day.
Polishing and delivery: Once your video is ready, we color-grade the footage for a cohesive, timeless look. We include all the RAW video footage from your day, in addition to your fully edited highlight video—so you don’t miss a single moment. We also offer free re-edits if there’s anything you’d like adjusted in your final film. And if you want something extra special, you can order one of our custom video albums—a beautiful physical book that plays your wedding film when opened, perfect for reliving your memories or sharing with family and friends.
